Employee Owned, Customer Driven...

P C Coaches Becomes Latest Bus & Coach Operator to Transition to Employee Ownership

P C Coaches of Lincoln Ltd, Lincolnshire & Humberside’s largest independently owned bus and coach operator, has become the latest company in the UK transport sector to transition to employee ownership through the establishment of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).

In doing so, P C Coaches joins a growing number of respected operators adopting the EOT model, including Alfa Travel, Stephensons of Essex, and Berrys Coaches, reflecting a broader shift within the industry toward long-term, independent ownership structures.

Founded in 1978 by Peter C Smith with just one coach, the company has grown over nearly five decades into a regional transport leader, now operating a fleet of 125 vehicles from four depots in Lincoln, Louth, Horncastle and Grimsby. The move to employee ownership secures the long-term future of the business while placing ownership in the hands of the employees who have helped build it.

Although traditionally a coach operator, the company has recently expanded its presence in the local bus market. It now operates a mix of commercial and contracted services and is an active member of Lincolnshire County Council’s Enhanced Partnership, as well as a founding partner of the Transport for Greater Lincolnshire Partnership and are members of ALBUM and the CPT.

Pete Smith will remain actively involved in the business as Chair of the Trustees of the Employee Ownership Trust, providing continuity of leadership and safeguarding the company’s values and long-term vision.

“From starting with a single coach in 1978 to becoming the region’s largest independent operator, this journey has only been possible because of the dedication and professionalism of our team,” said Pete Smith. “Moving to an Employee Ownership Trust is a natural next step. It protects the independence of the company, preserves our values, and ensures the business remains in safe hands for the future.”

Stephen Bryce, Managing Director, added: “This is an exciting next step for our company. Employee ownership strengthens our commitment to long-term growth, operational excellence and continued investment in our fleet and our people. It gives everyone within the business a shared stake in our future success.”

The transition will not affect day-to-day operations, management, or customer service. Schools, local authorities, corporate clients, private hire customers and community groups can expect the same dependable service and high standards that have defined P C Coaches of Lincoln Ltd for decades.

Under the EOT structure, a Trust established for the benefit of all current and future employees will hold a controlling interest in the company, ensuring long-term stability, independence and sustained regional investment.
